SwingLuxDay, Saturday April 14th, 2018 – ALL ABOUT CONNECTION

Where:

Classes and Party at Altrimenti5 Avenue Marie-Therese, L-2132 Luxembourg

What:

Here we are again with our monthly dose of inspiration! This is what we offer you for this edition of SwingLuxDay:

This workshop will be all about connection between leader and follower. Ultimately, aren’t we all just looking for the most fulfilling dance? Getting to this feeling of connection between leader and follow is a lot about knowing moves and technique but also about knowledge of the partner’s roles in couple dance.

What does it mean to be a leader or a follower? Where can we find inspiration? How do I best fulfill my role and still express myself to the music?

For this Martina and Roumany have devised 3 tracks for you, where we will work on ourselves individually as leader and follower and then bring the 2 back together again!

  • LEADERS TRACK with Roumany

This track will focus on you as a leader and your role in the couple dance. We will look for inspiration at how Frankie Manning saw himself and how he danced at the social dance. From there we will discover what it means to dance in couple.

As you may know Lindy Hop is a dance that expresses freedom and musicality, but how can you lead and still have freedom for expressing music and rhythms? Can we lead freedom?

If you are currently attending our classes you can register. If you have never danced Lindy Hop before or if you have only attended a couple of tasters, this workshop will not be suitable for you.

  • FOLLOWERS TRACK with Martina

This track will focus on you as a follower and your role in the couple dance. The material you can expect is:

  • Get to know your body (through stretching, core exercises, meditation, turns and balance, posture)
  • Learn a few short solo routines that include signature moves by some of the most inspirational solo jazz female dancers from the swing era (such as Josephine Baker, Consuela Harris, Norma Miller…); challenge: can you pick a move/style and put it in your Lindy Hop?
  • How do I find freedom in my footwork? How do I do my variations to express the music? I never know which variations to do! How do I unlock / unfreeze?
  • Break down swivels through the end of the Swingout, counts 7 + 8, and transition into counts 1 + 2; we might learn also some variations to add to your repertoire. We’ll need you to use your high-heel shoes, but dancing heels, please. No stilettos or 8 cm heels.

Expect to spend some time barefoot and please wear comfortable clothes: this will feel like a workout.

If you are currently attending our classes you can register. If you have never danced Lindy Hop before or if you have only attended a couple of tasters, this workshop will not be suitable for you.

  •  LEADER & FOLLOWER CONNECTION with Roumany & Martina

In this class we will renew, refresh and rebuild the connection between leader and follower on many different levels, from hand shaking to rhythms. Relaxed dancing, easy connection with the partner, musicality and rhythmical play is our aim for this class.

It is possible to attend to this track without taking part in the individual leader / follower track, but it is highly recommended.

If you are currently attending our classes you can register. If you have never danced Lindy Hop before or if you have only attended a couple of tasters, this workshop will not be suitable for you.

After classes we’ll swing the evening out in Altrimenti, starting from 20h45! Come join us for the our 5th birthday as an association in Luxembourg 🙂

Teachers:

Martina Natella

Hi! I am Martina. I discovered lindy hop in the late summer 2013, when a little group of dancers were swingin’ behind the Philarmonie in Luxembourg. Needless to say, it changed my life! This dance and music inspire me every day and I will be forever thankful to those who started it, bringing people together just to swing out. I have been honoured to learn from many legendary dancers, taking classes in many cities around the world with Norma Miller, Chester Whitmore, Harlem Hot Shots, Sharon Davis, Daniel and Åsa and many many more.

All of them contributed to that puzzle that is now my swing dance. My mission is to preserve and nurture swing dance and music by constantly seeking for their truths and roots. My main source of inspiration will always be the one and only Dawn Hampton, who embodied the values of swing how I like it, the queen of performance, entertainment and love: “Don’t count, feel! The only count I know, is Count Basie” (Dawn Hampton).

Roumany

In the 7th grade I encountered blues and jazz for the first time. Since then, the music has accompanied me every day. I only by chance stumbled upon the still young Lindy hop scene in Saarbrücken. Freedom waved to me and with full enthusiasm I went to every social dance, looked at many ILHC videos and I took all of the few classes that were offered back then. I wanted to get as much Lindy Hop as possible.

For me, Lindy Hop is a place where I can unfold through the music, without limitations. A mysterious place, even, because you simply do not know why there is so much joy. I think it is the perfect mix of music, rhythm and folly!

“If all people were swinging, there would be no war.” (N. Miller)

Lindy hop taught me a lot, including get to know myself and others; it made me develop myself as a person in a way that I thought I could never achieve. In my opinion, the best message spread by Lindy hop is that everyone can be themselves, without compulsion and judgments. Something that I haven’t seen in any other dance I know, is that in Lindy Hop the sillier you get, the better you swing!

FAQs

1. Is this workshop suitable for absolute beginners?

If you are currently attending our classes you can register. If you have never danced Lindy Hop before or if you have only attended a couple of tasters, this workshop will not be suitable for you.

2. I have never danced as a follower/leader, but I have danced in the other role for a long time. Can I attend the track of the other role? (Example: You have been dancing as a leader for a couple of years and you now want to attend the followers track)

Priority will be given to those who have experience in that role so that we can start from a common background. If we still have spots available, we’ll let in also people who don’t have experience in that role.

3. Do I have to register with my partner for the Connection workshop?

We would want you to learn how to connect with any partner – that is the beauty of Lindy Hop. You might have inspiring dances and beautiful moments with other dancers! However, if you register with your regular partner and do not want to rotate partner during the class, we will accept this. If you don’t have a regular partner, you are still more than welcome to join! However, we’ll need to have a balanced number of leaders and followers.

c) The original ticket holder must inform Swing Dance Luxembourg (SDL) of the transfer.
