Level Descriptions

This semester we are offering 5 levels of Lindy Hop, as well as Balboa, Solo Jazz and a brand new class, Slow Lindy and Technique!

If you are new to Lindy Hop, you should register for Lindy Hop Absolute Beginner course. If you are attending one of our courses, you should register for the same level that you are currently in, since the next semester will be a continuation. You can also add a new course (e. g. solo jazz, swing rueda or learn a new role in one of the lindy courses). If you are not attending any course but have previous dance experience, please read our level descriptions carefully before registering in order to choose the most suitable level for you. If you have doubts or questions, don’t hesitate to talk to your teachers or one of our Swing Dance Luxembourg organisers at social dancing, or write to info@swingdance.lu.

In general, it is advisable to stay in the same level twice before moving up to the next level. In order to ensure classes remain as balanced as possible, after the first class your teachers might ask or suggest that you move up or down a level.

  1. Lindy Hop Absolute Beginner
Description: Have you never danced Lindy Hop? Have you tried a few steps in one of our tasters and want to learn more? Have you taken beginner classes but quite irregularly and would like to work more on your basics? Then this level is for you! You will learn all about the bounce, triple steps, basic swing rhythms and figures, you will learn how to connect and dance with your partner by leading and following.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers

  1. Lindy Hop Beginner (for those who are now attending Tue/Wed Beginner course)
Description: You have been dancing for about four months and know the basic rhythms and figures of Lindy Hop. In this level you will work on consolidating your basics, expand your repertoire of moves, add simple variations and learn more about leading/following and connection in a dance.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers
  1. Lindy Hop Beginner-Intermediate (for those who are now attending Beg/Int course)
Description: You have been dancing for about half a year or longer. Dancing to faster tempos and transitioning between different rhythms can still be challenging. This is the level where you will consolidate your basics and technique, learn new variations and combinations as well as develop your skills of lead/follow and fine tuning body control and technique for the dance. These classes will continue to provide classic moves and solid technique even if you’ve been swing dancing for some time.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers

  1. Lindy Hop Intermediate (for those who are now attending Intermediate course)
Description: By now you have a Lindy Hop bug! You are comfortable with all the basics, the Swingout, Texas Tommy, basic Charleston steps (also to the faster tempos). Besides the lessons, you have already been regularly social dancing, attended some of our local workshops, probably know some solo jazz, and are free to play around with your partner and respond to the music in your dancing. You know basic swing rhythms without having to think about them and can lead/follow the transitions between them all in the one dance. You have started thinking beyond figures to styling, musicality and feel. The tempo of the lessons and music will go up and the material will be more challenging.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers

  1. Lindy Hop Intermediate-Advanced (for those who are now attending Int/Adv course)
Description: This is the highest level that Swing Dance Luxembourg will offer during weekly lessons. You have been dancing for at least 2 years. In this level, you are not only regularly social dancing, but you are probably travelling for the international workshops. You can comfortably dance to different tempos and styles of music. In this level, you will work on more complex figures and variations, improving your quality of movement and your musicality, as well as leader and follower connection at a more refined level.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers

  1. Solo Jazz (newly opened to all levels, including absolute beginners!)
Description: The Charleston, Tacky Annie, Shorty George, Scarecrow, Apple Jacks….Ever wondered what these were? Welcome to the world of Solo Jazz and Charleston. This course is for people with some swing dance experience. In this course you will get to work on the basics as well as the defining moves in solo jazz & Charleston. You will not only learn how to do these moves but you’ll also work on concepts such as body isolation, weight shifts, musicality etc. A great way to explore the world of swing jazz and express your creativity with solo dancing. A partner is not required for this class.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers

  1. Balboa (for those with Balboa dance experience)
Description: More and more Luxembourg dancers are learning this close, speedy, technical, elegant, subtle swing dance style! This class is for you if you have danced some balboa before. Expand your repertoire and diversity as a swing dancer, and be able to dance to really very fast music! The focus will be on how to lead and follow pure Balboa, common pure Bal and Bal Swing variations, and easy transitions between the two.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers

  1. Slow Lindy and Technique (open to all levels of dancers!)
Description: This course will be divided into two parts: slow Lindy and technique. The slow Lindy or Slow Drag classes will focus on how to dance to slower music – new figures, new positions, rhythms and smooth movement. The technique part will dive into everything that’s essential to establish a good dance: from the way you hold you body and move it, through connecting to your partner in the best way and sharing information together during the dance, to letting the music lead the way. During both parts you will learn lead and follow techniques that generally will be very useful in any other dance.
Teachers: This course will be taught by our visiting teachers
