Course Descriptions

Swing Dance Luxembourg has created a course structure for you that is not guided by traditional class levels, but by your dancing background and your personal learning preferences. Please read the class descriptions carefully to find the most suitable class for you. For those that took classes with us in the fall 2018 semester, we generally recommend you to continue in your group, unless you find the teaching pace of your current course too slow/easy or too fast/challenging. It will be a progression of the previous edition and not a repetition. See recommendation for course selection here.

Not clear for you which class suits you best? We’ve carefully prepared some frequently asked questions and their answer, please refer to them to see if they answer your initial questions! In case of questions that are not answered in our FAQs, don’t hesitate to write us an email.

Beginners

Lindy Hop

This is the class for you if you have never danced swing or you have attended a few tasters. This is a good class to repeat the basics before moving forward.

Ella Fitzgerald

Lindy Hop

This is a Lindy Hop class. This is the class for you if you took a beginner course or the Ella Fitzgerald class last semester and are ready  to expand your vocabulary. You know 8-count and 6-count and are comfortable playing with the music and gliding across the floor. The teachers will guide you and help you consolidate your basics, building new rhythms and helping you build confidence in your dancing. Have you taken this course already? Sign up again! It will be a progression of the previous edition and not a repetition.

Count Basie

Lindy Hop

This is a Lindy Hop class. This is the class for you if you feel very comfortable in your basics (both 6-count and 8-count) and have quite some moves in your pockets. You are also familiar with simple variations and some  charleston moves. You are ready to add more colours and flavours to your dancing. Have you taken this course already? Sign up again! It will be a progression of the previous edition and not a repetition.

Benny Goodman

Lindy Hop

This is a Lindy Hop class open to anybody who has been dancing regularly at classes and social dancing for over a year. The teaching pace of this class will be more relaxed: the material broken down more granularly and the vocabulary will be diluted over the course of the weeks. This is the class for you if you are looking for a “smoother and more relaxed” learning path. You want to be challenged but you need a step-by-step approach. Have you taken this course already? Sign up again! It will be a progression of the previous edition and not a repetition.

Jimmie Lunceford

Lindy hop

This is a Lindy Hop class. This is the class for you if you have been dancing regularly at classes and social dancing for over a year. The teaching pace of this course classes will be more intense and the teachers will not re-work on the basics with you. You are expected to be confident in your dancing on various tempos; you are able to express yourself with rhythm variations; you do not require detailed explanation to grasp new material.  It’s the right class for you if you are looking for a stronger push and a more challenging learning path. You learn better when you are pushed out of your comfort zone. Have you taken this course already? Sign up again! It will be a progression of the previous edition and not a repetition.

Al Minns

Authentic Jazz:

Solo Jazz is a powerful tool to become a better Lindy Hopper and you know it! This is the class for you if you have taken an Authentic Jazz course before; you know the Shim Sham routine; if we say things like Apple Jacks, half break, Suzie Q, Tacky Annie, Boogie Drops you know what we are talking about. This class is NOT for you if you have never attended solo jazz classes before.

Couple Blues (6 weeks) This is a Couple Blues class! This is the class for you if you have never danced Blues before, or it has been a while.

Balboa (6 weeks) This is a Balboa class. This is the class for you if you have already taken Balboa classes and your basics are solid. You are ready to improve your vocabulary. This class is NOT for you if you have never danced balboa before.

Lindy Clinic We have a new type of class for you! This is a class of exercises aimed at improving your technique and clear up things. Some of the topics include balance, connection, rhythm, speed. This class will focus on the technical aspect of the dance through repetition, muscle memory and pattern understanding. We encourage you to register if you want to work on your dancing in a more challenging way, understand your body and how it works through the dance beyond the fun of the social dancing. If you are attending a swing class this semester for the first time, this class is not for you.

*In case the Lindy Hop or Authentic Jazz class you selected doesn’t match your learning preference, you can contact your teachers after the class and be transferred to another group where requirements for your dance experience are better met. You need to decide within 3 weeks from course start. After the first 3 classes, no changes will be possible.

Teachers

This semester we will again be lucky enough to have an invitational professional teacher. Remember Alexandros Marinis from Greece? He’s coming back and he will be teaching all classes! He will be assisted by our lovely local followers.

Please refer to our teacher information page for more details!

non-marking: the soles of your shoes do not leave marks when dragged over a wooden floor.
indoor: the shoes are only worn indoors and never outdoors.
