We are delighted to present you our

SUMMER SOLO JAZZ SESSIONS

with Skye Humphries

Friday 7th to Sunday 9th June 2024

Skye Humphries is coming back to Luxembourg for another full weekend of solo jazz sessions! 🤩

We have designed different options for you. Please read the descriptions carefully and choose your track and/or special classes according to your dancing level and your schedule!

We also recommend you to mark Saturday night in  your agenda for a night full of swinging tunes and dancing!

Tracks and trainings

ℹ️ Note that all classes will take place in La Salle (ex. Art & Sport) !

Beginner/intermediate Track

This short track offers a unique opportunity to improve your solo jazz dancing with Skye!

Join this track if you have some basic knowledge of solo jazz, acquired in at least one semester with us (or elsewhere) or thanks to online / self learning. You know basic steps such as Tacky Anny, Suzie Q, Apple Jacks, Boogie back, Boogie forward, Shorty George, Mess around, Fall of the log. You might have learned a solo jazz routine, such as the Shim Sham. But you still need some guidance and/or are a little bit shy when it comes to solo jazz dancing socially or improvising. You would like to improve your solo dancing, gain confidence, start to improvise and learn new rhythms and combinations.

Then this 2h30 Sunday-morning track is for you. Be ready for Skye’s solo jazz magic!

Performance Track

This class is all about choreography and performance! Skye will teach a new choreography that we aim to share with our community Saturday night!

You have a solid basic vocabulary, acquired in at least 3 years with us (or elsewhere) or thanks to online / self learning. You know steps such as Tacky Anny, Suzie Q, Apple Jacks, Boogie back, Boogie forward, Shorty George, Mess around, Fall of the log, etc and maybe some variations of those steps. You are eager and comfortable to learn new solo jazz routines and you already know some, such as the Shim Sham or the Tranky Doo. You would like to improve your solo dancing, gain confidence and perform. Are you ready for show time?

Then this 4-hour-Saturday-track is for you.

Advanced Intensive Training (invitational)

On Friday night, we offer a 3-hour-intensive training for our most advanced solo jazz dancers. You have been dancing for countless years, you practice whenever you can and you have a wide repertoire of solo jazz moves and routines (such as Big Apple, Trickeration, Tranky Doo and of course the Shim Sham). You are eager to work on your styling, body movement, complex rhythms and improvisation.

This training is invitational and we do not open general registrations for it. If you think that this training is for you then please send us a mail to info[@]swingdance.lu.

Special topic classes

In the course of the weekend, Skye will also offer special topic open level classes for all dancers and students. Three classes, three topics to explore the variety of jazz styles and music!

These classes are open level classes, for all of you who have at least one semester of dancing experience (solo jazz and/or lindy hop and/or blues) and some solo jazz vocabulary*. We’re convinced that learning together with a wide variety of levels is beneficial both for new solo dancers and for very advanced solo dancers. Let’s learn and grow together!

* These classes are not open to absolute beginners. For absolute beginners, please join our taster classes and wait for the next semester (September) 🙂

Pick one or combine all special topic classes:

Special topic class 1 – Solo Groove

Let’s get ready to groove the night away! This class is all about groove, your connection to the music and to your own body while dancing.

Special topic class 2 – Charleston time!

In this class, Skye will take us back in time for some Charleston twists and kicks. Be ready to sweat!

Special topic class 3 – Slow Routine

Let’s slow down after this Charleston craze! In this class, Skye will teach a slow routine. Dancing to slow music is a great moment to breathe, but also to work on our rhythms and body movement as well as to take the time to open our ears and listen to the music!

Teacher

Skye was first persuaded to dance Lindy Hop by his mother in 1996, but quickly discovered his own love of social dancing, swing music and the Lindy Hop community.  This led him to a wider interest in dance and he took classes in ballet, modern, and Jazz.  Since 1999 he has taught wherever Lindy Hop is done- from national weekends to international dance camps.  He is a founding member of some the most influential modern Lindy Hop troupes- including Minnie’s Moochers, Mad Dog, and the Silver Shadows.  Skye has also won titles at all of the major Lindy Hop competitions- including ULHS, ILHC, ALHC and the World Lindy Hop Championships.  His involvement with Lindy Hop sparked his wider interest in America’s history and cultural heritage- leading him to pursue American Studies at The George Washington University where he received his master’s degree in 2007.
