Spring 2024 Dance Courses

Spring 2024 Dance Courses

Dear dancers,

We’re thrilled to welcome you to the upcoming Spring 2024 semester with an exciting surprise! Read below to find out more!

This semester, we are continuing our commitment to the “everyone leads and everyone follows” (ELEF) approach in our Lindy Hop classes. What does this mean? It means that all dancers will have the opportunity to learn and experience both leading and following roles in the dance! We choose this approach for two important reasons. Firstly, we strongly believe that embracing both roles is essential for your growth as dancers, providing a more profound understanding of the dance and its intricate connections. Secondly, we aim to eliminate the long waiting lists for single followers that have been a recurring challenge during registration periods.

We will retain one mixed-level course for those of you who have at least one semester of experience and wish to focus on a single role. For this specific mixed-level course, you will be asked to choose whether you’d like to sign up as a leader or a follower. However, for all our other Lindy Hop courses, you will no longer be required to designate yourself as a leader or a follower during registration!

As for our Blues courses, you can register in one of three roles: Leader, Follower, or Switch. If you register as a switch, you’ll be able to choose your role (i.e. leader or follower) for each class individually. We assume that where there are large imbalances for a particular class, Switch dancers will balance out the class. To register as a switch dancer, please write “Switch” in the comment box of the registration form. If you register as a couple, both partners need to fill out the registration form and indicate the name of their partner.

We’re excited about the dynamic and inclusive learning experience that ELEF brings to our Lindy Hop classes and can’t wait to see all of you on the dance floor in Spring 2024. Get ready for a semester full of new discoveries and endless fun!

Course Descriptions

Course Description
Lindy Hop (ELEF) – Beginner This is the level for you if you want to have a first glance into the world of lindy hop couple swing dances.  No prior dancing background is needed for this course. This level is also appropriate for dancers that have done a lindy hop course before, but want to reconnect with lindy hop after a long time without dancing. Our teachers will take things easy and will make sure to establish and refresh your basics.

In this course, you will learn both roles (lead and follow). We’re happy to be able to open two beginner courses, so please select the best date for you: Mondays or Wednesdays !

Lindy Hop (ELEF) – Beginner/Intermediate

Continuation course for Fall 2023 Beginner 1 or 2

This is the level for you if you have taken at least 1 semester of Lindy hop courses (for example Spring 2023 Beginner 1 or 2) before. You have learned both 6 and 8 count basic figures such as send out, send in, tuck turn, pass by, circle, promenades. You might need some practice still. You’re engaged and ready to come regularly to our social dancing events to practice and have fun!

In this course, we will work on your basics in both roles, leader and follower. We will have time to work on your connection with your dance partners and to add new figures to your vocabulary.

Lindy Hop (ELEF) – Intermediate

Continuation course for Fall  2023 Beginner /Intermediate and for Fall 2023 Intermediate who have completed one semester in intermediate

This is the level for you if you have taken at least 2 semesters of Lindy hop courses (for example Fall 2022 Beginner + Spring 2023 Beginner/Intermediate) before. You’re an active social dancer in our scene and/or elsewhere. You have learned both 6 and 8 count basic figures such as swing out, circle, tuck turn, send in, send out, promenades and more. You are comfortable dancing to mid or even fast tempo, changing from 6 to 8 count patterns and vice versa.

You have solid basics and are eager to learn at a steady pace. You’re ready to practice not only during classes, but also at our weekly social dancing events and any other occasion!

You will stay one full year in this course (two semesters) before moving to the intermediate/advanced course. In other words, if you have already taken the intermediate course in fall 2023, please choose this course once again: we promise that the course content will be different from your first semester in this course!

Lindy Hop (ELEF) – Intermediate/
Advanced

Continuation course for students who have taken Lindy Hop classes for 4 semesters at least!
This is the level for you if you have taken at least 4 semesters of Lindy hop courses before (that is, if you have started taking classes with us: beginner, beginner/intermediate, and 2 semesters in intermediate), and you have a good social dance background. You might also have taken a weekend workshop before in Luxembourg or in a different scene. You are comfortable with all the above mentioned 6 and 8  count basic figures and are about to break away from those basic patterns to enrich your dancing by adding other, more complex, rhythms. You have worked a lot on your swing out and maybe learned a few swing out variations. You are constantly working on your connection with your partner. You have quite some Charleston vocabulary. You are able to dance comfortably at mid and fast tempo.

Our teachers will build on your rich vocabulary to take you to the next level.  The teaching will be at a speedy pace in this class and your teachers will challenge your dancing to a higher level.

Lindy Hop – Mixed level Choose this group if you want to focus on one role, your role as a leader or a follower, and if you do not want to be introduced to the other role in the new « everyone leads, everyone follows » approach. Please note that this is a mixed level group. It is open to everyone who has done at least a full semester in the beginner course and is regularly joining our social dancing events. Our teachers will adapt the learning pace to the participants in the course and do their best to find a common ground where all participants can learn new material.

Solo Jazz – Beginner  This is the level for you if you want to have a first glance into the world of solo jazz swing dance. No prior dancing background is needed. This level is also appropriate for dancers who have done a solo jazz course before but want to reconnect with solo jazz after a long time without dancing or strengthen their basics. Our teachers will take things easy and will make sure to establish and refresh your basics.

This level is also a good choice for you if you have started solo jazz recently and feel that you want to strengthen your basic vocabulary before moving to the next level.

Solo Jazz – Intermediate/Advanced This is the level for you if you have taken at least 1 semester of Solo Jazz and you are comfortable with the basic solo jazz vocabulary: the Suzie Q, Tacky Anny, Apple Jacks, Knee Slaps, Boogie back, Boogie forward, Groove Walk are part of your dancing. You may already be dancing basic solo jazz routines such as the shim sham. You are not afraid to work on improvisation and transitions. The teaching pace will be higher here and your teacher will challenge your dancing to a higher level.

This semester, we merge again the intermediate and advanced solo jazz groups, as we are convinced that learning together is beneficial both to the more and to the less advanced solo dancers.

Solo Jazz – Performance group

This semester we launch a performance group. In the course of the semester, we will learn one to two choreographies, we will work on individual expression and performance skills. The aim is that the participants to this course will be ready to perform, maybe at a social and when our association receives requests for external performances.
This course is open to the most experienced dancers of our scene. You have countless years of solo jazz experience and a solid solo jazz vocabulary. You might know some of the classic solo jazz routines (such as Big apple, Tranky Doo, Trickeration). Maybe you have already performed or participated in a performance track.

Admission to this course is based on invitation or audition. We will send out our invitations when the registrations open. If you think that you should be in this group but have not been approached by us, please contact us for an audition (mail to: info[@]swingdance.lu) !
Blues – Beginner/Beginner+

This semester we open a new Absolute Beginner Blues course. This is the class for you if you want to have a first glance into the world of couple blues dancing or refresh your blues dancing skills. No prior dancing background is needed for this course. Join us if you would love to discover how to dance to slower music. You will learn how to connect to blues music, but also some fancy moves and tricks, so that you can dance with groove in no time. This class is also suitable, if you have some blues dancing experience and want to refresh your basics.**

Blues – Intermediate

This is a Couple and Solo Blues class, open to people who have taken blues classes for more than one semester and are confident with the basics of blues dancing. This semester we’ll put a lot of emphasis on simplicity. And as a totally new topic we’ll explore different blues idioms, which are blues dance styles such as Texas shuffle, Latin blues, or Jookin’. Leaders as well as followers will be thrilled with learning a new blues dance vocabulary.**

**For both blues dance courses you can register in one of three roles: Leader, Follower, or Switch. If you register as a switch, you’ll be able to choose your role (i.e. leader or follower) for each class individually. We assume that where there are large imbalances for a particular class, Switch dancers will balance out the class. To register as a switch dancer, please write “Switch” in the comment box of the registration form.

Teachers

For the Spring 2024 semester, get ready to be inspired by our incredible lineup of local and international teachers!

But first here’s a little secret that might surprise you—our local teachers are not professionals! 😲 Their passion for Swing fuels their determination to continually train and work diligently, preparing your weekly courses. They invest hours into gathering material, breaking it down for your understanding, and selecting the perfect tunes for your dance experience. Their genuine desire to share the joy of dancing drives them to commit their evenings to you for an entire semester, all while juggling their daytime jobs. 👏❤️

Over the past year, our dedicated team of teachers has invested their time and energy in intensive teacher and dance training to bring you a fantastic semester. We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve added a dash of international flavor to our classes by welcoming Serpil Yildirim & Erol Akinci from Turkey. They will be an integral part of our vibrant community, sharing their unique thoughts, style, and dance moves with us. You can look forward to their invaluable contributions after the Easter holiday break.

Location

Note that all classes will take place in Altrimenti. The majority of the classes will be held in Salle Rheinsheim, which is the main room where we usually dance in Altrimenti.

ℹ️ We’re lucky that the rooms in Altrimenti have a proper and good wooden floor. In order to protect that floor, indoor shoes are required for all dancers! Please make sure to wear shoes that do not leave marks on the floor.

For the solo jazz advanced as well as exceptionally for other classes we will meet in Salle Belair. This room can be found on the first floor of a side building of Altrimenti, and is at 2 minutes walking distance. See instructions below on how to get there:

The entrance towards Salle Belair looks like this from the main street Avenue Marie Therese.
